Why Quail?

What made us decide to make quail our first homestead livestock?  Well it’s simple.  They mature faster than chickens, lay eggs sooner than chickens and can be harvested in just 10 weeks.  Win, Win, Win!!!  When it came to make our homestead more sustainable from the beginning, the choice was simple.

Now I did have some hesitations at first.  I mean, I grew up with all my ancestors having chickens.  I mean we have all heard that chickens are the gateway farm animal.  Yes they are, or just maybe they were?  Quail became my gateway farm animal and I couldn’t have been happier with my decision.

Unfortunately, I ordered eggs off of Ebay and they were not may I say the best at all.  In fact after incubating them, only 3 developed and only one fully hatched.  I candled all the others and they were not even fertile.  But we did get our first animal born on the farm and she is the Matriarch of our quail.  Her name is Holly and she is now the queen of her very own aviary that she shares with 5 other hens and one Roo.  Oh, she has upstairs tenants too.  We have 10 beautiful pigeons that now share here aviary, but more on them later.

Above is Holly in here aviary, and below is a picture of her aviary as we were finishing it.   I think she and the others are some lucky quail.

So follow us on our journey with quail, and watch for future posts as I show you what I have learned and how I can help you with raising quail and answering some of your questions.
